Japan's Toyota Motor says quake impacts output of 55,000 vehicles

Japan's Toyota Motor Corp said Monday production of around 55,000 vehicles has been affected as a result of a temporary shutdown in its operations in the wake of last week's powerful earthquake. Toyota announced pricing on its 2008 Camry and Camry Hybrid 07Camrytoday. Both go on sale next month, with no significant changes from the 2007 versions of the bestseller. Toyota's Prius hybrid has become the bestselling car in Silicon Valley. Through May, 1,627 Prius registrations have been recorded in Santa Clara County, according to R.L. Polk. That puts the Prius ahead of Toyota's Camry and Corolla and Honda's Accord and Civic, all cars that outsell the high-mileage, gas-electric sedan nationwide. Green Car Congress1 relays a story about the Panasonic EV Energy Company. The company is a joint venture between Matsushita Electric Industrial and Toyota. The Nikkei reports that Toyota Motor plans to build a new factory to boost annual production capacity. The new plant will increase the output capacity of Shizuoka Prefecture-based Panasonic EV Energy Co. to a level sufficient to produce NiMH battery packs for 750,000 vehicles per year. ... Toyota Team SARD's specially-prepared Supra HV-R hybrid GT racer has won the Tokachi 24-hour endurance race in Japan. The converted Super GT-spec racing car did so convincingly, too. As the only GT-class car in the field, the Denso SARD Supra HV-R maintained a steady lead of several laps throughout the course of the race, and in the later hours, it essentially dialed things up a notch and ran away from the rest of the field. ... The world's first Toyota Prius cab driver is sold on hybrid technology, which allows his vehicle to run on either a gasoline or electric motor, or both in tandem. Vancouver's Andrew Grant says his 2004 Prius paid for itself in less than 24 months through savings on parts, service, labour and fuel. Few, if any, other hybrid drivers could say the same thing, but that's due to the fact that Mr. Grant and his partner keep their Yellow Cab on the road for 22 to 24 hours a day, and average 160,000 kilometres a year. ... Automakers released June sales numbers today, and its gives us a chance to see how things are faring after half of 2007. And the continuing and growing success of the Prius hybrid is worth noting. Toyota dealers have sold nearly 100,000 Priuses so far this year. (94,503 actually.) That’s nearly double from the 48,156 sold in Jan-June 2006.
