Citing rising environmental concerns among car buyers, German luxury sports car-maker Porsche said Monday it's developing a hybrid drivetrain for its Cayenne SUV to drastically cut fuel consumption. In a statement issued at its headquarters in Stuttgart, Porsche said its aim was to achieve average fuel consumption of 8.9 liters (2.35 gallons) per 100 kilometers (62 miles). ... Lexus will increase the number of hybrids it builds, a senior executive said today, as Toyota's luxury division hopes to increase annual sales by 100,000 or more overall. GM may have to take a loss on early runs of vehicles equipped with its upcoming Two Mode hybrid propulsion system in an effort to make the vehicles more attractive to customers. The combination of an electric motor and a combustion engine makes the smart fortwo even more economical and environmentally friendly than ever. The hybrid concept reduces consumption and emissions for both the diesel and the petrol version by around 12 percent. For example, the standard consumption (NEDC) of the smart fortwo hybrid drive (hd) diesel is reduced from 3.3 litres to 2.9 litres per 100 kilometres. Stuttgart - DaimlerChrysler will unveil the first prototype of the diesel-electric hybrid bus this year, the company has announced. The prototype, based on the Citaro G bus, will enable emission-free operation in battery-only mode. Series production is planned for 2009.
