Beach endorses HRT's plan for hybrid buses

The City Council voted Tuesday to back a "universal shuttle" concept pushed by Hampton Roads Transit. The first hybrid diesel-electric buses could be running along Atlantic Avenue by next summer, replacing the aging fleet of "VB Wave" trolleys. HRT wants to put the shuttles in Norfolk as well - to replace the downtown "NET" buses - but city leaders want to see the new vehicles before they agree to anything. Transit passengers won't be riding new hybrid electric buses anytime soon. B.C. Transit won't be adding anymore to its fleet until the cost of the buses drops. "We like the hybrid busses and we like the concept but at this particular point the price needs to come down a bit more before we can actually say with some certainty that those were going to be the buses," said Ron Harmer, vice-president of technical services for B.C. Avis introduces the Toyota Prius to UK Fleet

Avis is now offering customers the chance to rent a Toyota Prius from its London locations. The environmentally friendly hybrid vehicle, which runs on a mixture of petrol engine and electric motor, is available to book through the Avis Prestige website www.avisprestige.com and is exempt from the congestion charge. The launch of the 20 Prius vehicles onto the UK fleet follows the announcement, in February, that Avis Germany introduced natural gas VW Tourans to its fleet at 19 locations in 15 cities across the country. ... UPS ''Green Fleet'' Expands with 50 Hybrid Electric Vehicles

UPS recently announced its fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles had expanded with the deployment of 50 next-generation hybrid electric delivery trucks. The 50 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) will operate in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix.
